For my young brothers

Jungle Prey (1991)

The hunt goes down in the dark of night,

The animal in me is ready to take flight,

I growled at the moon as to warn my prey,

Some mothers’ son won’t see another day,

Strapped with my nine I prowl the night,

Hungry for the kill or to die in a fight,

An image flashed before me as bright as can be,

A voice whisper softly, saying tell what you see,

Off in the distance that stretched out for a day,

There’s hunt a going down and I am the prey!

Ward of the state

I recently had an opportunity to hear Steven Pemberton’s story and it reminded me of my troubled past and how I struggled to rise above those circumstances.  Growing up I wrote a lot of poems and letters that I have not shared with many people outside of my family, but they speak to some of the challenges I faced as a Ward of State.

Innocents Lost

Thought by many to be a child of good and plenty,

But a reality check saw a child born of physical neglect,

Rage got the best of him,

The man caught and arrested him,

Cornered, his tongue unleashed,

The language of the beast,

Hold me down, you cannot,

For my mind has not forgot,

How my childhood was stripped from me,

Bringing me pain and misery,

For as long as I live,

There’s one thing I can’t forgive,

Though my heart wants a truce,

From being the victim of child abuse….

Valentines Poem

For my Wife:

An angel by my side,
Last night as I lay,
Slumbering and peaceful,
She promised to stay

An angel by my side,
Touched my heart with her hand,
And told me to love and for love I should stand,
This is my charge, I give unto you,
I pray that you listen and your heart follows through

An angel by my side,
Once again, as in a dream,
She reached out and touch me,
And my heart let out a scream,
Of joy and wonder,
With passion from above,
I held her in my arms,
At last this is love…

Does Smart have a color

I was recently asked if being smart is tied to a specific race or color.  Below was my response to the question:

Being smart reflects an innate and/or acquired ability to understand and comprehend new ideas and concepts.  It has nothing to do with your color. Its more about your willingness to pursue higher plains of thought, beyond what you already know or have experienced.  Some of the smartest people I know are African Americans.  Our ancestors valued education far more, beyond anything, they saw the ability to read, write and think critically as true freedom..
